Augusten Burroughs on addiction, writing, his family and his new book

Friday, October 12, 2007

I had an unofficial phone call from Gay Talese last Tuesday. He had just flown back from Colombia and he was cranky. “I’m happy to do an interview with you,” he said, “but what the hell could you ask me that’s not already out there? Have you even bothered to look?!”

“Jeez, Mr. Talese, lots of things,” was my response. I lied. The truth is that when I call people to interview them, I do not have a set of preconceived questions. My agenda is to talk to them and gain a sense of who they are; to flesh them out as humans. To find out what they think about the world around them at that moment. With Gay Talese I had little interest in talking about Frank Sinatra Has a Cold and with Augusten Burroughs I had little interest in discussing Running with Scissors. I want to know what they think about things outside of the boxes people have placed them in.

With a memoirist like Burroughs, even this is a challenge. What parts of his life he has not written about himself, other interviewers have strip-mined. When we met for dinner at Lavagna in the East Village, I explained to Augusten this issue. I suggested we make the interview more of a conversation to see if that would be more interesting. “Instead of you in the catbird seat,” I said, “let’s just talk.”

We struck an instant rapport. What set out to be an hour and half interview over dinner had turned into four hours of discussion about our lives similarly lived. I removed half of the interview: the half that focused on me.

Below is Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s conversation with writer Augusten Burroughs.

Lib Dems launch manifesto

Thursday, April 14, 2005

An exhausted Charles Kennedy returned to the election campaign to launch a twenty page Liberal Democrat manifesto targeted at disaffected Labour voters, promising a fairer tax system and withdrawal from Iraq.

Entitled The Real Alternative the manifesto pledges to reduce the lowest rate of income tax, but increase the rate on those earning over £100,000 to 50%. The party would also scrap the unpopular local council tax in favour of a new local income tax. The manifesto also promises to remove hidden “stealth taxes”.

Under this system the party claims the poorest 15 million (25%) of people in Britain would be better off, and the middle 50% would be paying no extra tax.

The manifesto promised to scrap the controversial university tuition fees, increase services for pensioners and add £100 a month to the state pension, and train 21,000 new primary school teachers and 10,000 new police. A Lib Dem government would make eye and dental checks free, and reduce the cost of prescription medicine.

The Liberal Democrats were the only one of the three largest parliamentary parties to have consistently voted against the Iraq war, and the manifesto has promised an exit strategy with a phased withdrawal of Britain’s 8,000 troops still in the country.

“We reject a foreign policy based on ‘my ally right or wrong’,” Kennedy said. “And we say that war should always be a last resort.”

Kennedy, who became a father on Tuesday, admitted he’d had little sleep before the manifesto launch, and stumbled while answering questions on the proposed tax system.

Finding The Right Home Theater Installer}

More On This Topic:

Submitted by: Adela Parker

Finding the right home theater installer in Michigan can feel like the toughest thing to do after choosing your home theater system. Below are some tips that will help you choose the best installer.

1. Select someone locally. There are basically thousands of home theater installation companies throughout the country. Find one that is at most within a 50-mile radius from your home or installation premises. With that you are likely to have an installer come by in no time at all.

2. Before having the installer come to your place, first get the prices. This you can do over the phone and check if their within your budget range.

3. Find out the time schedules. If your home theater installer can be at your place as early as 7am and you only get up at 9am, then it’s going to be tough couple of mornings for you. On the other hand if you are neat and your installer is untidy then you may not get along very well.

4. Ask for that particular installer’s website and check for images of some of the installations they have completed. These images should include various installations including; mounting of plasma TVs, home theater connections and satellite installations. Most professional installers will keep a showroom of their workmanship. However it is important to go on and make more researches as some installers may just upload images of completed projects.

5. Ask for any references to projects similar to yours. Visit their website and read reviews. Also ask the manager or anyone who has used the services of that company before about how satisfying their work is.

6. Before work commences make sure that you have a written and signed contract that includes; pricing, payment terms, equipment specifications, expected date of completion, connection cables and the amount to be paid.

7. Ask the home theater installation company if they have insurance coverage in the event that something goes wrong. Although accidents are rare, but they do happen. Suppose that company breaks your $3,000 plasma screen on installation, you will expect the insurance policy to cover that. But however if you break your own home theater system then that’s entirely on you and not on the installation company. Dealing with a company that has some form of insurance is always the way to go

8. Find out if that installation company specializes in residential or commercial installations. A company that specializes only in commercial premises may not exactly know how to handle a residential setup. This is because houses are more delicate than commercial premises, some people are particular and if say the drilling leads to cracks in the walls or paint peels off then that’s trouble.

9. Although references are one of the best insights as to how your professional installer works, ask your installer if they have some training or qualifications. Most home theater companies are certified electricians and so are their employees.

10. Many home theater installers work with architects and interior decorators. These professionals can give you recommendations on which installer you can use.

Acne Diet Link Exposed: Is There an Acne Cure Diet that Works?

Joshua Okose

Acne Diet and The Money Factor: You Can’t Sell a Healthy Diet

Inquire from medical doctor if there is a connection between diet and acne and just about all of them will claim there is none. Quoting from the Journal of the American Medical Association: “Diet plays no role in acne treatment in most patientseven large amounts of certain foods have not clinically exacerbated acne”.

With years of medical education and clinical experience behind these assertions, how can we the simple folks who suffer from acne overcome these statements and think otherwise? The answer is: doubt. Doubt, if its stays in the confinement of reason, can open many doors otherwise will stay shut forever. Believe it or not, doubt can modify reality. Doubt can cure your acne and doubt can even save your life.

Fact is, innumerable acne sufferers have reported that their acne seemed to get worse when they consumed certain foods and saw striking positive change over their acne state when they Got rid of the same foods from their diet and when particular foods with specific nutritional value were merged into their diet.

So why do dermatologists so stubbornly posit that diet does not cause acne? The answer: you can’t make a profit propagating a healthy diet. At least not as much money as you could make by selling drugs and over the counters. There is a huge pressure upon doctors coming from the drug and pharmaceutical companies to recommend expensive medications and lotions that create dependence. The truth is, that your doctor is in a way, a captive by the trillion dollar drug companies. Did you know that the drug companies, who have no interest in producing something that they cannot control financially, sponsor most medical schools?

The right diet, although not a cure by itself, can, in many cases, dramatically reduce inflammation and even totally clear one’s acne (if you’re one of the fortunate ones who’s acne is triggered by allergic response to food). Promoting a clear skin diet simply means less profits for the drug and pharmaceutical companies.

The fact is that customary medications will never cure your acne, plainly because they are pre-designed NOT to fix the internal cause of acne. They are pre-designed to deal with the external symptoms of a disease as they create more and more dependency and more dependency means making more money all at our cost and lack of knowledge.

The Hypothesis That Diet Doesnt Bring About Acne Is A Myth

The dogmatic theory that diet does not cause acne and that acne is merely an incurable genetic disorder was founded upon two dated researches published in 1969 and 1971 that were aimed at studying the relation between diet and acne.

YouTube Preview Image

These studies were the foundation of the acne symptoms treatment strategy, in other words, because acne is a genetic disease that cannot be stopped, the only way to deal with acne would be to tackle its symptoms (bacteria, inflammation, puss, redness, greasiness), by using creams, antibiotics, taking prescription drugs and over the counters.

Surprisingly enough, years after the above studies were publicized, clinical attempts and in depth researches experimenting the acne diet link have discovered that the studies from 1969 and 1971 had came to the false conclusions and were in fact seriously flawed.

Modern studies have clearly found a substantial connection between diet and acne. It appears that the wrong diet is now considered to be one of the prominent acne contributing factors that can negatively affect hormonal regulation and the natural activity of toxic removal, which can seriously ones existing acne.

Diet Molds Who You Are (Including Your Acne)

In the same way that crashing waves shape beach cliffs and just like the wind shapes the canyon walls, slowly and methodically over time, so does eating shapes and effects our physic, our internal system, our physical and mental being, from the organ down to the cellular level.

The idea that an object foreign to our body that is inserted by the food that we eat, has no outcome on us, or has no impact on chronic conditions such as acne is illogical. Diet is the original thing that impacts and shapes who we are.

Diet has cumulative effect on our bodies, and that includes our skin state and acne, which is a manifestation of a chronic internal trouble slowly molded and built by the improper daily dietary choices over the years.

Acne Diet and The Kitavan Islanders

While in the U.S, more than 80% of teenagers between 16 and 18 have acne and more than 17 million Americans suffer from some form of acne, there is an engrossing evidence that native people that live and eat in traditionalistic ways, have significantly lower to no occurrences of acne.

In 2002, Dr. Cordain and his colleagues publicized a landmark study that examined 300 people living in the Kitavan Islands off the coast of Papua New Guinea that revealed that none of the islanders had even one blemish on his or her face. Similar to the Kitavans, no instance of acne had been observed when similar experiment had been carried out upon the South American Indians called the Ache, residing in a remote jungle in eastern Paraguay.

The natives of Kitavan and the South American Indians had no access to the current over the counters, topical creams or conventional acne medications and they had no dermatologist to consult with. The only vast difference between them and American or European citizens is their diet.

Acne Diet and Sugar: The Sweet Poison

Aside from the fact that sugar is a 100% pure chemical with no nutritional worth, modern findings have distinctly shown a relation between the ingestion of sugar and the aggravation of acne.

When you consume any kind of processed carbohydrates (white sugar, white flour, white rice) heres what happens: right after you insert that ‘sweet poison’ into your body, it speedily spikes up your blood sugar levels. Your body needs to bring those levels down so it secrets a surge of insulin, other male hormones and an insulin-like growth factor called IGF-1. The excretion of these hormones overwhelms your liver and your internal system in general. The male hormones encourage the skin to release large amounts of sebum oil: The greasy substance that encourages the p.acne bacteria to grow, resulting in the exacerbation of your acne.

Acne Diet and Dairy Products: Got Milk? Got Acne

If you thought sugar could exacerbate your acne, here’s another major nutritional player in the formation of acne: behold the miracles of milk. Milk (all dairy products included) is the most harmful, mucus forming, allergenic and acne exacerbating food you can find. Surprised? I thought so. After years of unfailing brainwashing by the media, who can accuse us for thinking milk is good for strong bones and healthy teeth? The truth is: every sip of milk contains 59 different intense hormones, (which trigger the hyper-production of sebum oil resulting in more acne), saturated animal fat, steroid hormones, dead white blood cells, and cow pus in abundance!

Did you know that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) endorses 750 million pus cells in every liter of milk (about two pounds) produced in America? Think about it, the next time you pop a pimple.

Scientific findings already point the finger at milk as one of the pessimal acne aggravating foods: “As pointed out by Dr. Jerome Fisher, ‘About 80 percent of cows that are giving milk are pregnant and are throwing off hormones continuously.’ Progesterone breaks down into androgens, which have been implicated as a factor in the development of acne…Dr. Fisher observed that his teenage acne patients improved as soon as the milk drinking stopped.”

If there’s one component you should take off from your diet in the quest for clear skin make it this one. Not only will you see a straightaway betterment over your acne, you’ll feel a huge burden has been raised from your body. If you worry about calcium intake, dont! Milk being acidic forming food creates a leeching effect where calcium is taken from your bones to balance the acidity. Milk actually robs your body from its calcium resources. Green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds are not only first-class sources of calcium they also have the powers to help you combat your acne symptoms.

Diet Is Only One of The Factors That Cause Acne

Dairy products and sugar are not the only acne exacerbating foods. The two above cannot sum up the list of western made acne triggering foods. There are various foods you should distinctly stay away from if you ever wish to clear your acne. The good news is that there are scores of other foods such as essential fatty acids that are not only excellent for your skin, they can actually help you clear your acne, by re-balancing your body and promoting to an acne-free environment.

The proper nutrition performs an important part in the complex process of acne formation. When doctors assert there is no connection between diet and acne because certain individuals can eat specific foods and get acne while others eat the same foods and don’t, these doctors have failed to realize that there are several factors involved in the formation and aggravation of acne and diet is only ONE of them.

The Final Verdict On The Acne Diet Connection: How To Finally Overcome Your Acne Challenge

Acne is a complex condition that is triggered by various underlying factors. The only way to knock off your acne condition is to take on all these acne-contributing factors-holistically. Since the improper diet is only one of these acne-triggering factors, in most cases no special diet can cure acne.

There is a however, a tight connection between diet and acne formation. Dietary factors can trigger and exacerbate your existing acne. Avoiding the wrong foods such as milk, sugar and hydrogenated oils, and eating cleansing and hormonal balancing foods such as green leafy vegetables and essential fatty acids, can help your skin heal itself from the inside out and dramatically reduce your acne symptoms.

There are also various fundamental dietary principals that you must know and follow if you ever want to cure your acne for good.

Taking charge over your body and adhering to these dietary principals along with taking the necessary steps to take on all acne contributing factors, holistically, will not only cure your acne for good and give you the unflawed acne free skin you merit, following these principals will also significantly improve your overall health, mental well-being, look and feel.

Study finds burning your food could cause some cancers

Wednesday, December 5, 2007

Dutch scientists have said in a study that burning your food may lead to certain types of cancer, particularly in women. Scientists also say that more research is needed to make a definite determination and that there are other factors that could be to blame.

“This new study supports our current advice, which already assumes that acrylamide has the potential to be a human carcinogen. Since acrylamide forms naturally in a wide variety of cooked foods, it is not possible to have a healthy, balanced diet that avoids it,” said a Food Standards Agency spokesperson.

According to the study, acrylamides, a chemical produced when cooking foods high in carbohydrates over 120 degrees Celsius (248 degrees Fahrenheit) in the frying, toasting and grilling processes, is a likely cause of some womb and ovarian cancers. Although it was found in 2002 that the chemical may be a cause of some cancers, the new study shows, for the first time, a link between the chemical in a human diet being a cause. To date, there is no evidence to suggest the chemical may cause breast cancer.

Scientists followed and monitored 120,000 people over an 11-year-period, of whom 62,000 were women. Of the women, 300 ended up contracting ovarian cancer with 327 contracting womb cancer.

The study concluded that more than 40 micrograms of the chemical, or one bag of potato chips per day, is twice as likely to cause cancer in women.

“General advice, resulting from this project, is to avoid overcooking when baking, frying or toasting carbohydrate-rich foods,” said a spokesman for the European Union.

Gay Talese on the state of journalism, Iraq and his life

Saturday, October 27, 2007

Gay Talese wants to go to Iraq. “It so happens there is someone that’s working on such a thing right now for me,” the 75-year-old legendary journalist and author told David Shankbone. “Even if I was on Al-Jazeera with a gun to my head, I wouldn’t be pleading with those bastards! I’d say, ‘Go ahead. Make my day.'”

Few reporters will ever reach the stature of Talese. His 1966 profile of Frank Sinatra, Frank Sinatra Has a Cold, was not only cited by The Economist as the greatest profile of Sinatra ever written, but is considered the greatest of any celebrity profile ever written. In the 70th anniversary issue of Esquire in October 2003, the editors declared the piece the “Best Story Esquire Ever Published.”

Talese helped create and define a new style of literary reporting called New Journalism. Talese himself told National Public Radio he rejects this label (“The term new journalism became very fashionable on college campuses in the 1970s and some of its practitioners tended to be a little loose with the facts. And that’s where I wanted to part company.”)

He is not bothered by the Bancrofts selling The Wall Street Journal—”It’s not like we should lament the passing of some noble dynasty!”—to Rupert Murdoch, but he is bothered by how the press supported and sold the Iraq War to the American people. “The press in Washington got us into this war as much as the people that are controlling it,” said Talese. “They took information that was second-hand information, and they went along with it.” He wants to see the Washington press corp disbanded and sent around the country to get back in touch with the people it covers; that the press should not be so focused on–and in bed with–the federal government.

Augusten Burroughs once said that writers are experience junkies, and Talese fits the bill. Talese–who has been married to Nan Talese (she edited James Frey‘s Million Little Piece) for fifty years–can be found at baseball games in Cuba or the gay bars of Beijing, wanting to see humanity in all its experience.

Below is Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s interview with Gay Talese.

UN aid convoys face increasing attacks in Darfur

Friday, July 27, 2007

The United Nations (UN) World Food Programme (WFP) raised concerns about a dramatic escalation in attacks on food aid convoys by armed bandits in the Darfur region of Sudan. WFP says the attacks constrain its ability to feed the more than two million people in the area receiving aid.

Negotiations over a UN Security Council resolution authorising a joint UN-African Union security force for the region continue but full deployment could take up to a year.

“In the last two weeks, nine food convoys have been attacked by gunmen across Darfur,” said Kenro Oshidari, WFP Sudan Representative. “WFP staff and contractors are being stopped at gunpoint, dragged out of their vehicles and robbed with alarming frequency,” he said.

“These abhorrent attacks, which target the very people who are trying to help the most vulnerable in Darfur, must be brought under control,” he added.

A WFP official told Wikinews that the attacks and robberies have occurred in all regions of Darfur, and that the blame can’t be ascribed to a particular group. “Frequently the bandits are wearing uniforms but often in one group of bandits there may be more than one uniform. Thus, we are not pointing fingers at any one group.” said Emilia Casella, WFP Spokesperson for Sudan. “We are calling on all parties to respect the neutrality of humanitarian convoys and their drivers, who are delivering food to civilians who are victims of the conflict.”

“On July 20, a convoy traveling on the Tawilla-Kaura road in North Darfur was stopped by 16 armed men. The drivers were forced out of their vehicles and the robbers demanded 5 Sudanese pounds from each (roughly equivalent to US$2.50). Those who could not pay were beaten. Similar incidents have happened on the same road in the past two weeks.”

According to WFP, in 2007 so far, 18 WFP convoys have been attacked – “shot at, looted, drivers robbed and/or injured”. Four vehicles were stopped and the drivers and passengers robbed. Six vehicles were stolen, where the gunmen drove away with the WFP staff members still inside, though they were later released. “There were no major physical injuries, but naturally such experiences are very traumatic,” said Casella. “These incidents have occurred in all three of the Darfurs, in areas controlled by various groups or the government.”

In the week of July 15-21, there were five incidents in South Darfur, during which a total of seven trucks were looted of approximately 10.5 tonnes of food assistance.

The Darfur operation is the WFP’s largest humanitarian mission, with about 790 staff working to feed more than two million people every month.

The WFP indicated that it has been difficult to hire and retain the commercial trucking companies used to move food and supplies throughout the region due to the risks involved in the service. WFP Public Affairs Officer in Washington D.C. Jennifer Parmelee told Wikinews that “hiring reliable transport in other insecure environments, [such as] Afghanistan and Somalia, is extremely challenging.”

Air service is employed for remote locations and where delivery by road has become too dangerous.

Parmelee told Wikinews that the “increasing insecurity will almost certainly further constrain [WFP’s] ability to operate in Darfur – it already has.” WFP Spokesperson for Sudan, Emilia Casella, indicated that “humanitarian access is likely to be increasingly difficult due to insecurity.” However, the situation has not prevented all aid delivery. “Despite insecurity and access problems, WFP food assistance reached about 2.6 million people in Darfur last month,” said Casella.

A UN resolution on the deployment of a hybrid African Union (AU) and UN force of 26,000 troops is working its way through the UN. Britain and France presented revisions to the draft, which dropped a threat of “further measures” against Sudan for obstructing peace efforts, though Sudan’s ambassador, Abdalmahmood Abdalhaleem, has objected to the revisions.

A deadline of December 31 exists to transfer authority in Sudan’s Darfur region from the AU to the proposed AU-UN force. Full deployment of all 26,000 troops would take up to one year.

The draft resolution would allow the use of force to protect the mission’s personnel and humanitarian workers and would “protect civilians under threat of physical violence”.

Jennifer Parmelee of the WFP suggests that the deployment of the hybrid force under such a mandate would be a positive development in the aid agency’s ability to carry out their humanitarian assistance. “Sure an expanded AU/UN peacekeeping force would help.” said Parmelee. “As it is, AU is stretched very very thin, and…is unable to accompany most of our convoys.”

According to WFP, there are approximately 12,000 humanitarian workers in Darfur, which is a drop in numbers even though the need for aid workers has increased.
